The open file folder emoji is almost identical to the original file folder emoji except that it is – you guessed it! – held slightly more open! The folders resemble those used for filing cabinets or to store notes in, but are always empty and free from loose pages or dividers in their emoji form. The Apple version is a silvery gray color while all other platforms support a blue or brown color emoji. It is used in conversations about office or college work and studying, or to tell someone sarcastically that you’re putting their thoughts or opinions “on file”. It is also commonly associated with the folder icon on GUI operating systems.
